Fouillé au cœur des Pyrénées, cette vallée glaciaire occupe le bassin supérieur de la rivière Gállego et est entouré de hauts sommets comme Collaradada, Tendeñera ou Anayet et le grand massif de Balaitus-Panticosa déclaré Réserve de la biosphère ainsi que les vallées voisines Ordesa et Monte Perdido.
