Cave of the Cave Bear and Tella Museum
Discover the Cave of the Bear and the Interpretive Space of the cave bear, where you can learn how this extinct species lived 9,000 years ago in the Pyrenees and how its remains were excavated from a 30,000-year-old site.
Location
The cave is located at 1,600 m above sea level in Tella (Tella-Sin), at the foot of the Portillón de Tella, next to the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. It is the highest cave bear site in Western Europe.
The Cave of the Bear
- A route filled with stalactites and stalagmites of unique shapes and colors.
- See the remains of cave bears, larger than today’s brown bears, which fed on roots, bulbs, and fruits.
- More than 4,000 bone remains from 36 specimens have been excavated, and it is estimated that the cave could have sheltered up to a hundred bears.
- A hibernation site for these animals, with findings that reveal details of their life and extinction.
Visits are only conducted with an official guide, ensuring safety and a complete experience.
Cave Bear Museum of Tella
Located in the Casa del Molino of Tella, the museum is the starting point of the visit. In its 75 m² exhibition area, you will find:

- Laboratory and research processes
- Cave bear remains
- The frieze “80,000 years ago
- The relationship between bears and humans

How the visit is carried out
1. Start at the Cave Bear Museum in Tella.
2. Travel by private vehicle along the forest track (1.3 km from Tella).
3. Arrive at the marked parking area and walk to the cave with the guide.
